TPE stands for total power exchange. It describes a consensual BDSM relationship in which one adult gives another significant authority over agreed areas of life. The scope varies between relationships, and consent can still be withdrawn.
What “total” can cover
A TPE relationship may include routines, service, clothing, sexual decisions, household roles, protocols or other everyday choices. Some couples aim for a 24/7 dynamic. Others use the term for a strong commitment to authority while keeping major areas outside it.
There is no external checklist that makes a relationship officially TPE.
Consent does not disappear
A person can consent to a wide authority structure without surrendering their legal personhood or the ability to leave. Agreements need a way to be reviewed, paused and ended. “You gave me total control” cannot justify coercion, threats or ignoring a withdrawn yes.
Practical safeguards
Discuss health care, finances, work, housing, social contact, privacy and emergency decisions explicitly. High-impact areas deserve more protection, not less. Independent access to identification, medical care, money and trusted support can help prevent a chosen dynamic from becoming entrapment.
A relationship can feel emotionally absolute while retaining practical exit routes.
TPE vs a scene
A scene-based power exchange lasts for a defined encounter. TPE generally describes an ongoing relationship structure. Someone can love intense submission during a scene and want complete equality afterward. Another person may prefer everyday protocols but avoid physically intense play.
Questions before using the label
Which decisions are delegated? Which are never delegated? How often will you review the agreement? How can either person raise a concern without punishment? What happens if the relationship ends? Clear answers are more meaningful than the word total.
